The German pigeon breeding loft Röntgen & Sohn is today ranked among the most stable, respected, and successful structures in international marathon pigeon racing. Its development reflects a natural and well-founded progression: from classic long-distance competitions practiced until 2010 to pure marathon racing – the highest discipline of modern pigeon sport – a transition decisively influenced by close professional ties and cooperation with the Freialdenhofen family.
The year 2011 marked the official start of the loft, when Karl-Heinz Kanski provided 13 breeding pairs, enabling the rapid construction of a solid genetic foundation capable of supporting extreme races between 800 and 1100 km. At the same time, Freialdenhofen bloodlines were strategically integrated into the breeding nucleus. Results followed immediately: already in the very first season, three exceptional pigeons emerged, defining the identity and direction of the loft.
Zizou (1990-11-42), a direct descendant of the Kanski pigeons, quickly became a symbol of the Röntgen & Sohn loft. In 2013, he won the prestigious Goldene Barcelona title and is the sire of the 1st National Narbonne winner. Today, his genetic influence is found in the majority of Röntgen pigeons. Alongside him, Playboy 51 (1990-11-51) distinguished himself with ten international top classifications, including three TOP 50 National Pau rankings, while also proving to be an elite breeder. The founding trio was completed by Queen of Germany (1990-11-112), one of the most valuable marathon hens of her generation, with notable performances and a major influence on breeding.
To further strengthen this genetic foundation, the Röntgen & Sohn loft collaborated with renowned names in international marathon racing. From Friedhelm Menne, the famous cock “188” (Bruno × Sirafa) was acquired—an exceptional breeder and sire of pigeons with top results at Barcelona, Perpignan, and Marseille. Later, cooperation with Marc Schreurs brought significant added genetic value, with Schreurs blood integrated even into the loft’s Primus Inter Pares No. 1 (2020–2024).
From a morphological and functional perspective, the philosophy of Röntgen & Sohn is clearly defined: medium-sized pigeons, perfectly balanced, with strong backs and dense musculature. Special attention is paid to the eyes, with preference given to pigeons featuring a small pupil, a complete correlation circle, and intense iris pigmentation. The selection process is extremely strict and uncompromising: each pigeon is given a maximum of three years to prove its breeding value and is removed without hesitation if it fails to confirm.
Training and care are carried out according to a rigorous system inspired by the Freialdenhofen method. Feeding is individualized and adapted to each stage of preparation, using precisely measured Beyers mixtures, complemented by Röhnfried supplements. Health control is ensured under the supervision of veterinarian Norbert Peeters, and preventive care is treated with the utmost responsibility.
Overall, Röntgen & Sohn represents a true model of modern pigeon sport, built on proven genetics, strict selection, and long-term vision. The pigeons of this loft are not the result of chance, but the expression of a deliberate, ambitious, and extremely well-conceived breeding program—a genuine benchmark in international marathon racing, often rightly referred to as Freialdenhofen 2.0.
