Although Satu Mare County has fewer than 100 active fanciers, it continues to be one of the strongest forces in Romanian pigeon sport, especially in the one-day-race categories. The 2025 season, however, also brought a clear confirmation in the Middle Distance category, where Satu Mare fanciers dominated the national rankings in a decisive manner.
In the Middle Distance Young Birds category, the results are truly impressive: the top four national positions are occupied by fanciers from Satu Mare, and no fewer than eight pigeons from this county are ranked in the National Top 10. Moreover, the podium of the Ace Middle Distance Young Birds category is also entirely occupied by Satu Mare competitors. It was a landmark season, worthy of detailed analysis, starting with the national champion of the Middle Distance Young Birds category.
Ovidiu Pop – a rapid rise from county level to the national top
The 1st National place was claimed by Ovidiu Pop, a fancier still relatively new to the sport, who has nevertheless demonstrated in a very short time the mindset of a true competitor. Whether racing speed, middle distance, long distance or marathon events, his objective remains the same: top rankings.
His rise has been remarkable. In just six years of pigeon racing, after solid results at county and provincial level, the 2025 season brought him national recognition. The Middle Distance Young Birds National Champion is the cock RO-2024-0764437, which completed the category standard with only 13.17 penalty points. The young cock recorded outstanding rankings at the Acs races (398 and 399 km), where he placed 2nd out of 2,543 pigeons and 5th out of 4,994 pigeons, as well as at the two Gyor races (426 and 413 km), finishing 19th out of 4,454 pigeons and 11th out of 1,547 pigeons. In addition to his middle distance performances, the pigeon confirmed his consistency by winning 2nd County Ace Speed Young Birds. “This cock comes from the third round of youngsters, bred late, in July. He did not race as a youngster and had not even completed his moult, but this year he showed an extraordinary homing instinct. He always entered the loft first, whether returning from training tosses or races. His mother is a hen from Samuel Vlașin, a very good racer in my loft, and his father comes from Gabriel Robaș, bred from pigeons of Cristi Kuzmik, with bloodlines of national champions. The pigeons were raced on widowhood, with two training tosses per week – one shorter, depending on recovery, and one of about 70 km. Feeding was based on Royal mixes – Gaby Sport, Koopman, and Energy from Versele Laga,” explained Ovidiu Pop.

The Nagy Family – a genuine passion for pigeons
The 2nd National place was secured by the Nagy Family, the racing name under which Olimpiu Nagy from Petin competes. This time, the podium pigeon was a young hen that flew the same races as the category champion, accumulating 18.25 penalty points, the difference being made by just a few positions in the rankings. At the Acs races (375 and 374 km), the hen placed 3rd out of 4,994 pigeons and 9th out of 1,931 pigeons, while at Gyor (389 and 402 km) she ranked 6th out of 1,119 pigeons and 34th out of 4,454 pigeons. “2025 was a very good season for us: 2nd National Middle Distance Young Birds and 3rd National Ace Middle Distance Young Birds, both achieved with hens received as a gift from my friend Robert Fekete from Sălaj. I race all categories, including marathon, but from separate sections. Speed, middle distance and long distance pigeons are raced on widowhood, while marathon pigeons are raced natural. Feeding was based on mixtures from Versele Laga, Animi’s and Royal, and the supplements used were from Röhnfried. During the season, I trained the pigeons once or twice a week at distances of 30–40 km,” detailed Olimpiu Nagy.

The Haidu B. + Robaș M. tandem – consistency and performance at Middle Distance
The 2025 season was an exceptional one for the Haidu Balasz + Robaș Mircea tandem from Seini as well. Present in numerous national rankings, they occupy the 3rd and 4th National places in the Middle Distance Young Birds category. The 3rd National place was won by the cock RO-2024-0764717, with 20.61 penalty points, a pigeon that is also the National Ace Middle Distance Young Birds Champion. The cock recorded three races over 400 km and one of 399 km, with the following rankings: 6th out of 2,543, 9th out of 1,080, 21st out of 4,454, and 26th out of 4,994 pigeons. “This pigeon has a very special story. As a youngster, he raced only a few times, after which he stayed in the loft of a friend, something that I believe helped him a lot. As a yearling, he started the season perfectly, constantly arriving among the first pigeons. Besides his individual titles, he was a key pigeon for the team, contributing decisively to winning the National Middle Distance Fanciers Trophy. He is bred from a cock from Nagy Samuel, original Pinter Ferenc, and a hen from my friend Istvan Bartoș, a granddaughter of the famous Blizzard – 1st National Ace KBDB 2021,” concluded Haidu Balasz.
