As in every competitive season of recent years, the pigeon fanciers from the Moldavia Province once again pushed the Marathon concept to an extreme level, entering young birds over distances exceeding 800 km. In 2025, this practice was once again crowned with success, proving that the tradition of young bird marathon racing is deeply rooted and quite reliable in this region.
Under the coordination of the Botoșani Federation branch, the 2025 young bird season also included two marathon stages, released from Suwałki (Poland), meaning distances of over 700 km and in some cases even over 800 km for part of the participants. Four branches lined up at the start—Suceava, Botoșani, Iași, and Neamț—confirming the strong interest in this category.
The first stage, held on September 20th, 2025, gathered 2,669 pigeons and 235 fanciers. Conditions were difficult, with a delayed liberation and arrivals only on the second day of competition. The second stage, on October 8th, had 743 pigeons and 137 fanciers at the start. After both stages, 98 young birds achieved the norm in the Young Bird Marathon category.
Champions Breed Champions
A benchmark result was achieved by the brothers Lucian Aparaschivei and Ionel Aparaschivei, who competed in the marathon with 35 young birds. The standout bird of the season was RO-2025-0154032, which showed its potential from its very first race, when it arrived first on the loft. Although its arrival took place on the second day at 12:46:39, it still placed 7th on the release, entering the calculation for a very strong norm score. The calculation proved excellent in the second race as well, when the same pigeon again arrived first at the loft, placing 21st on release and 13th in the zone at a distance of 786 km. It thus completed the norm with 24.58 penalty points, earning the title of National Champion.
National Vice-Champion with a Small but Efficient Team
A remarkable performance was also achieved by Cristian Abalașei, who, despite breeding only around 50 young birds annually, delivered a top-level result: 2nd National Place.
From a limited team of 10 young birds in the first race and 12 in the second, he consistently clocked three birds each time. The standout pigeon was RO-2025-1014510, with very strong results: first bird on the loft in both stages, followed by placements of 9/592 pigeons (zone ranking) and 14/1,061 pigeons (central ranking). This led to a final coefficient of 28.40 penalty points, earning him the title of National Vice-Champion in the Young Bird Marathon category.

Continuous Performances for Gheorghiță Corfu
A well-established name in young bird marathon racing, Gheorghiță Corfu once again confirms his value in 2025. He achieved 3rd National Place with the hen RO-2025-0671800, a late-bred young bird hatched in July, which proved to be of exceptional quality. It placed 1st in the zone (781 pigeons) and 16th in the Burdujeni central race (528 pigeons), at distances of 815 km and 804 km respectively, accumulating a total penalty score of 31.58 points.
This performance is even more valuable considering that his young birds are raced naturally, without darkness training and without pairing, being gradually introduced starting from the old bird races. For the 2025 season, the fancier prepared 50 young birds, half of which survived until the end of the marathon stages, and four managed to fulfill the norm.
