Vasile Beldea and Nicu Șiclovan Wins the 2025 National Dresden Race

The 2025 national marathon racing season kicked off last weekend, as several pigeon racing provinces across the country hosted their first events in this prestigious category. These national competitions always attract special attention, both due to the prestige and competitiveness involved, and because they are open to fanciers from any county, regardless of local protocols or flight plans.

A Strong Start in the Western Province – Dresden, the First National Race

The first national race of the 2025 season was organized by the Arad branch and took place in the Western Province, with Dresden (Germany) as the release point. The event drew a large turnout, gathering 609 fanciers from 10 counties who entered a total of 5,156 pigeons.

Participants from Two Provinces

Most participants came from counties within the Western Province. The Arad branch fielded 1,214 pigeons from 92 fanciers, while Timiș was represented by 111 fanciers with 1,276 pigeons. Bihor had 88 participants (715 pigeons), and Caraș Severin entered 127 fanciers with 1,053 pigeons. Additional entries came from Satu Mare (58 fanciers/490 pigeons), Sălaj (50/190), Hunedoara (43/80), Maramureș (35/125), Alba (2/2), and Harghita (2/9). However, these latter counties did not meet the minimum requirements to qualify for county-level rankings.

A Challenging Race with Remarkable Arrivals

The 5,156 pigeons were released at 7:00 AM in what turned out to be a very demanding race. Although most fanciers were flying distances between 760 and 860 km, only the overall stage winner recorded an average speed over 1,100 m/min, highlighting the difficulty of the event.

Outstanding Performance by Vasile Beldea

The undisputed star of the race was the hen RO-2022-0050928, raced by Vasile Beldea from Arad. She covered the 810 km distance in approximately 12 hours and 15 minutes, arriving at 19:15:51 with an impressive average speed of 1,100.84 m/min—earning her the top position in one of the Western Province’s most prestigious marathon races. Vasile Beldea, from Livada (Arad County), is a devoted marathon specialist. He has previously won multiple county titles and even secured 1st place in the extreme marathon from Stendal in the 2022 season.

Nicu Șiclovan Leads the Fanciers Rankings

The overall winner in the fanciers category also hails from Arad—Nicu Șiclovan from Curtici, a multiple national marathon champion. Racing a 796 km distance, he entered 62 pigeons, 25 of which successfully placed. With a coefficient of 12.80 penalty points, he topped the general fanciers’ ranking out of 609 participants. His score was earned by two experienced hens—RO-2023-0089230 (8th place overall) and RO-2023-0089238 (58th place). Additionally, Șiclovan had three more pigeons in the top 100 of the overall ranking.

County Rankings – Only 5 Branches Qualified

According to the rules, a minimum of 250 pigeons and 50 fanciers per county is required for official county rankings. Out of the 10 participating branches, only five met these criteria: Arad, Timiș, Bihor, Caraș Severin, and Satu Mare. The county-level winners were as follows:

Timiș: Râmneanțu Oliviu (both pigeons and fanciers)

Bihor: Zgîrd Family & Ciordaș Family (pigeons), Doru Sabău (fanciers)

Caraș Severin: Alexandrescu Constantin (pigeons), Firma Cristici (fanciers)

Satu Mare: Pop Dan (pigeons), Szemak Tamas (fanciers).
