The national ranking for the Youth Long-Distance category – 2025 season – reflects, more than ever, the extremely high level of pigeon racing in Romania in this category. The top 10 positions include pigeons from nearly all the country’s pigeon racing regions, demonstrating not only the athletic quality of the birds but also the professionalism of their breeders.
A truly remarkable aspect is that the top three ranked pigeons competed on three different flight routes, in distinct directions. The difference between 1st and 10th place is only 10 penalty points, and between 2nd and 10th place just 6 points, confirming the balance and competitiveness of the category.
The national podium is completed by representatives from Moldova, the West, and Oltenia, specifically from the Suceava, Sălaj, and Gorj branches.
The Iacob, Gabi & Costică Combination – A Perfect Debut
Behind the national champion title are not two, but three pigeon fanciers: Iacob Chindriș, Gabi Bîrgăuan, and Costică Bîrgăuan, brothers-in-law, from Cajvana, Suceava County. The loft manager is Iacob Chindriș, who previously competed individually in the 2023 season, becoming county champion in the Youth Middle-Distance category.
The 2025 season marked the team’s official debut. Without a breeding stock, the trio invested in several batches of young pigeons, purchased in 2024 from established breeders, including Hrab Ovidiu and Leșan Ionuț. After the initial selection, 58 young pigeons were retained to form the 2025 racing team.
The pigeons were initially raced naturally in the first two races, then switched to widowhood. Throughout the season, results were exceptional: over 20 stage podiums, culminating in multiple national trophies.
The undisputed star of the loft is the male RO-2024-0322576, originating from the Hrab Ovidiu & Leșan Ionuț pairing. This pigeon achieved a historic performance:
National Youth Long-Distance Champion – 1.73 penalty points
National General Youth Champion
National Vice-Champion As Long-Distance Youth
Additionally, he is part of the national team for the Pigeon Olympiad, I-Long Distance category, and the World Best Pigeon, Long Distance category, ranking first in both.
The national Youth Long-Distance title was earned with the following results: 2/3,881 pigeons – 605 km; 4/6,351 pigeons – 608 km; and 12/20,652 pigeons – 537 km.

Roland Szabo (SJ) – Return to the National Podium
After winning the national title in 2021 in the Adult Speed category, young pigeon fancier Roland Szabo from Cehu Silvaniei (Sălaj Branch) returned to the podium in 2025, this time in the Youth Long-Distance category. The female RO-2024-0574038 won three 1st-place stage finishes (out of 968, 665, and 354 pigeons), totaling 5.35 penalty points, securing 2nd place nationally.
“I race 40–50 pigeons annually. The system is widowhood, with pairs separated two weeks before the season. Preparation is identical regardless of distance, and pigeons are trained once or twice a week at 30 km. The vice-champion comes from a very valuable family, with close relatives who are national and provincial champions,” explained Roland Szabo.

The Surlea Family (GJ) Completes the Podium
3rd place nationally in Youth Long-Distance went to male RO-2024-2035041, raced by the Surlea Family from Târgu-Cărbunești, Gorj Branch. He is also the 2025 National Gold Vice-Champion, with 2.50 penalty points. The decisive rankings were achieved in extremely challenging races launched from Greece: 3/7,159 pigeons – 552 km; 3/1,430 pigeons – 630 km; and 8/2,724 pigeons – 552 km.
“We raced the entire season under widowhood. Nutrition was based on Versele Laga: Gerry at the start of the week, Champions and Energy during preparation. The male is a combination of Vandenheede, Drappa, and Jan van den Pasch lines,” stated Cosmin Surlea.
