Pigeon fanciers Dominic Bedeleanu and Alexandru Șchiau, who have competed together as a team since 2021, based in Iclod, Alba County, are true specialists when it comes to racing young birds. Over the past few years, the pair have won numerous national trophies in both old bird and yearling championships, and in the last two seasons, they managed to replicate the same success with youngsters. Multiple national champions across several young bird categories, they kicked off the 2025 season in spectacular fashion, winning the first three races held so far.
This year’s young bird season in Alba County is structured around two separate race programs. The first program includes eight short-distance speed races—this is the plan followed by the Bedeleanu+Șchiau tandem.
National Record in the First Race: Top 66 Positions Secured
Of the eight speed races in Plan 1, six are launched from Dobricu (Maramureș County), a 138 km distance for the Bedeleanu+Șchiau team. The first race took place on August 17, with 3,016 pigeons entered by 81 fanciers. Given their track record, Bedeleanu+Șchiau were among the favorites, but what they achieved was truly historic: with 149 youngsters entered, they took the top 66 positions on the release! All 66 birds arrived within just six minutes, between 09:43:13 and 09:49:13.
In total, they classified 111 pigeons in this first race and also secured 1st place in the fanciers’ ranking.
Top 37 Spots in the Second Race
A week later, another Dobricu race was held, this time with 2,429 pigeons and 79 fanciers competing. Bedeleanu+Șchiau entered 140 youngsters and managed to secure the top 37 positions on the release. Once again, they also ranked 1st among fanciers, with 76 birds classified.
Another 1st Place in the Third Race
On August 30, the third Dobricu race took place, with the tandem entering 134 pigeons. Once again, their birds performed at the highest level, winning 1st place against 2,064 pigeons, while also finishing 2nd in the fanciers’ ranking among 72 competitors. In this stage, they classified 77 birds, 52 of which ranked in the top 100 of the release.
Dominic Bedeleanu explained their system:
“I’ve been racing young birds in darkness since 2016, and over time I’ve perfected this system. This year I brought in about 30 youngsters from Alexandru Cazacu and around 70 from Gheorghe Grosu. I’m racing them now, as I’ve also achieved top national results with their pigeons in past seasons. All the youngsters go through a longer or shorter darkening period, during which they only get around 10 hours of light per day. Depending on when they are bred, they enter this system earlier or later, but in any case, the process must start by the end of March. Later, depending on how they molt, they can stay in darkness until one or two months—or sometimes just two to three weeks—before the races begin.
We put a lot of emphasis on training. At home, they must fly for 1 hour and 20 minutes daily, and in addition to that, we take them on 20 to 40 training tosses by car, at distances ranging from 30 to 50 km. This system has brought us many top national results, and contrary to popular belief, the youngsters we train this way continue to perform and win national trophies as yearlings, and even at two or three years old”.
