Stavros 1 – A Testament to the Courage of the Pigeon Fanciers from Gorj

The pigeon fanciers from Gorj have only been competing on the Bulgaria–Greece route for two years, but their pigeons already give the impression of being seasoned flyers on this line. Both racing seasons with the mature birds — especially this year’s — have been very successful, and the 2025 young bird season fits right into this positive picture. The youngsters have performed so well that the fanciers from Gorj decided to enter them in their very first long-distance race, held on September 14, 2025. 

A total of 1,303 young birds were entered by 122 fanciers from Gorj for this first long-distance race of the young bird championship. The release point was Stavros, Greece, a location that ensured distances of over 500 km for all participants. 

Double Success for Cristinel Vladu 

Among the competitors in this debut long-distance race for young birds was Cristinel Vladu, from Bolboși, a member of the Turceni Pigeon Club. He was also the first fancier to experience the excitement of an early arrival — at 16:25:54, his pigeon RO-2025-0460627 returned home. Just 35 seconds later, another one of his pigeons arrived. These two pigeons were the first to be reported and, naturally, occupied the top two places in the provisional ranking. 

The two birds recorded speeds of 1,136.06 m/min and 1,129.63 m/min over a distance of 521 km, results that no other pigeons were able to surpass. Thus, Cristinel Vladu secured both first and second places in the race. 

By the time the final results were confirmed, seven of the 25 pigeons entered by Cristinel Vladu had made it into the prize list — a solid result for such a demanding event. 

Pavel Dumitru Achieves the Best Fancier Coefficient 

Another noteworthy performance came from Pavel Dumitru, from Frasin, member of the Avântul Bărbătești Pigeon Club. He chose to compete in the Stavros 1 long-distance race with a team of six pigeons, and they performed excellently. In total, four of them managed to place, with the first two arrivals finishing 9th and 66th, both part of his team entry. 

The resulting penalty coefficient of 57.56 points was the lowest among all fanciers, earning Pavel Dumitru first place in the fanciers ranking. 

A Successful Test for the Young Birds 

Overall, the Stavros 1 long-distance race — though a challenging test for young pigeons still in their early stages of competition — turned out to be a success. By the time the race was closed, 45.13% of the pigeons entered had successfully returned to their lofts.
