A week ago, on June 9, the first long-distance race took place in the Bistrița-Năsăud and Cluj pigeon racing branches. The pigeons were released from the town of Katowice, Poland, having to cover between 520 and 560 km to reach their lofts. The first pigeons were clocked in after approximately six hours of flight, and for the father-and-son duo of Nicoară Vasile and Narcis, Katowice turned out to be a perfect race.
Being part of one of the most challenging geographic areas in the country, pigeon fanciers from Transylvania often join forces, especially for long-distance races, to benefit from a higher number of pigeons and participating breeders. This is also the case for the two aforementioned branches—Bistrița-Năsăud and Cluj—which are competing together in 2025 starting from the first Fond race.
First Place for Both Pigeons and Breeders – Nicoară Vasile & Narcis
The stage launched from Katowice was organized by the Bistrița-Năsăud branch. From the organizing branch, 45 breeders participated, entering a total of 592 pigeons, while from the Cluj branch, 1,544 pigeons were entered by 134 participating breeders. In total, 2,136 pigeons were released at 07:04. Given the shorter distances, the first pigeons to arrive were recorded in Cluj. However, the standout competitors of the race were two breeders from Simionești, Bistrița-Năsăud—Nicoară Vasile and his son, Narcis—who managed to take first place in both the pigeon and breeder rankings.
They won the pigeon ranking thanks to their experienced hen RO-2021-0182102, who has a long history of good results. Her arrival was registered at 13:07:01 in the duo’s loft. In fact, the tandem had one of the longest distances in the race, 558 km, which the winning hen covered at an average speed of 1,533.06 m/min.
She was also part of their racing team and was followed a few minutes later by another team pigeon, the cock RO-2023-0565023, who ranked 15th in the race. Together, the two pigeons earned a penalty score of just 7.49 points, which proved to be good enough for the tandem to also secure first place in the breeder ranking. Thus, for the Nicoară Vasile & Narcis team, the Katowice Fond stage turned out to be more than perfect! In total, the duo ranked 10 of the 17 pigeons they entered, placing 1st, 15th, 17th, 52nd, 71st, 76th, etc.
