Just like in several other categories analyzed this season, the 2025 Ace Middle Distance category was clearly dominated by hens. Out of a total of 89 norms achieved nationwide, the top five scores were recorded by hens, while only two cocks managed to enter the national Top 10, confirming once again the outstanding competitive form of the females in middle-distance racing.
The national podium is entirely occupied by fanciers from Muntenia Province, with two positions going to breeders from Giurgiu County (1st and 3rd place), while the second place was claimed by a tandem from Prahova County.
Marian Iancu (Giurgiu) achieves his goal: national champion in his favorite category
Marian Iancu is one of the young and ambitious pigeon fanciers from Giurgiu County, his loft being located in Bâcu village. Consistent and highly motivated, he managed in just a few seasons to move from county and provincial success to top national performances. After finishing 2nd National General Old Birds and 3rd in the Olympic Team, Category H, in 2023, the 2025 season brought him the fulfillment of a personal objective: National Champion in the Ace Middle Distance category, which is also his favorite discipline.
His champion hen is RO-2022-0268317, which completed the norm with an exceptional coefficient of 80.35 penalty points, over 60 points ahead of the second-ranked pigeon. She clocked seven middle-distance races, all released from Hârlău (Iași County), over a distance of 349 km.
Among her most notable rankings are:
1st place from 803 pigeons,
2nd place from 2,209 pigeons,
3rd place from 626 pigeons.

“Middle distance is by far my favorite category, and I set myself the goal of becoming a national champion as soon as possible. Achieving this title in the Ace category makes it even more special. The champion hen was bred by Costin Preda from Prahova County, from Leo Heremans pigeons originally obtained from Sorin Florea. In 2025 I raced 30 pigeons – 15 cocks and 15 hens – on widowhood, with partners kept at home. At the beginning of the season, all of them raised one youngster, then they were separated and raced like this until the end. I used feed produced by the Romanian brand Pigo and focused especially on preparing the hens for middle distance races. Between the seven races, the pigeons had two training tosses of around 40 km, while at home they trained once or twice mainly so I could observe their condition. The champion hen narrowly missed a Top 3 national position in the Middle Distance Old Birds category as well, because in the last race three hens arrived together and she was clocked second,” Marian Iancu explained.

The Stroe & Bartoș tandem – national vice-champions
After becoming National Champions in the Middle Distance Old Birds category, the tandem formed by Florin-Alin Stroe and Istvan Bartoș added another major achievement to their record: 2nd National in the Ace Middle Distance Old Birds category. The norm was achieved with the same hen, RO-2023-0957149, which accumulated a total coefficient of 144.45 penalty points, after clocking seven races released from Peștera (Bulgaria), over a demanding distance of 380 km. Alin Scărlătescu completes the national podium
The national podium is completed by another fancier from Giurgiu County, Alin Scărlătescu, a direct competitor and club colleague of Marian Iancu. Their pigeons competed and ranked in the same races throughout the season. His hen, ring number RO-2022-0604230, achieved the 3rd National position with a total coefficient of 161.55 penalty points. It is worth noting that 113.42 points were scored in a single extremely difficult race, released from 411 km, a significantly longer distance compared to the other two hens on the podium.
“I have been racing since 1995, with only one break in 2015. I mainly focus on long distance and marathon due to the lack of kilometers in other categories. However, some time ago I purchased a middle distance–long distance pair from Alexandru Cazacu, with Jan Hooymans and Dirk van Dyck bloodlines, from which this hen was bred. Her father resulted from a cross between pigeons from Florin Lăzărică and George Vochin. I raced on widowhood, with a strict training program around the loft, morning and evening, plus two 60 km training tosses between races. The results c ould have been even better, but I was away on vacation during the season and the pigeons were not prepared at the same level. Still, I am satisfied with this performance,” Alin Scărlătescu concluded.
