Gorj: Stavros 2 – A True Test of Endurance for Young Birds

The last day of September marked the second long-distance race for young birds organized by the Gorj Federation. Compared to the first event in this category, Stavros 2 turned out to be significantly tougher, with most of the classified pigeons returning only on the following day.

Challenging Weather and a Smaller Entry

Participation numbers dropped sharply for this second race. While more than 1,300 pigeons were entered in the first long-distance event, only 454 young birds from 73 fanciers took part in Stavros 2.
Difficult weather conditions at the release site delayed the start until 09:20 a.m., and the tough headwinds throughout the route made the race extremely demanding. The small number of pigeons that managed to return on the first day — and the relatively low velocities — clearly reflected the level of difficulty.

Victory for “Fam. Surlea C.A.M.”

The first arrivals began reaching their lofts after 6:00 p.m., following more than nine hours of flight. Among the early returns was the young bird RO-2025-2020671, raced by Cosmin Surlea of Târgu-Cărbunești, competing under the name “Fam. Surlea C.A.M.” — an acronym formed from the initials of Cosmin, his wife Alexandra, and their daughter Miriam.

Although not the first pigeon to clock in, Cosmin’s bird, arriving at 18:43:31, achieved the highest velocity of the entire release980.18 m/min over 552 km — securing 1st place overall. Out of the 14 pigeons entered by Surlea, five managed to classify, confirming the consistency of his young bird team.

The Neagoie Brothers Take 1st at Fanciers’ Level

Brothers Alin and Cătălin Neagoie, from Frasin, members of the Avântul Bărbătești Pigeon Club, also produced a strong performance. They had already impressed in the first long-distance race, taking 10th, 11th, and 17th places, with 14 of 37 birds classified.

Those same 14 pigeons were entered again in Stavros 2, and once more they proved their quality. Their first arrival reached the loft at 18:27:13, securing 3rd place overall, while the next two finished 9th and 11th. Together, these results earned the brothers 44.05 penalty points, enough to win 1st place in the fanciers’ category. In total, 6 out of 14 of their birds made the prize list.

A Race That Tested Everyone

By the end of the first day, only 32 pigeons had returned to their lofts. The race remained open until the following day, when the classification closed with just 30.40% of the entered pigeons back home — a clear indicator of how demanding this second long-distance event truly was.
