Florin Zaharia, Champion of the Extreme Old Birds Ace Category 2025

The Iași Federation, a medium-sized branch well diversified in terms of race categories covered by its members, once again achieved two top national results this season in the Extreme Old Birds Ace category. Both the national champion and vice-champion come from this county, while the podium is completed by a fancier from Suceava.

Although the regulations of the Extreme category require races of over 900 km, the Iași Federation chose to participate in the Birzai National and Madona National races, together with the entire Moldavia region. Some of these competitions even exceeded the 1,000 km mark for certain participants. Kedainiai was the third Extreme race and the first in the local calendar for this federation, held in cooperation with fanciers from Bacău, Vaslui, and Neamț counties. Under these conditions, Extreme enthusiasts faced a very demanding season, with tough stages and strong competition. However, courage and preparation were rewarded accordingly.

Florin Zaharia took a risk and won

In the 2025 season, Florin Zaharia from Pașcani – Iași Federation – chose to focus almost entirely on the Extreme category. A passionate long-distance fancier, he entered the majority of his loft team into Extreme races, and the results clearly confirm that his strategy was successful.

At Kedainiai (928 km), he entered 59 pigeons. At Madona National he sent 52 birds, and at Birzai he competed with 39 pigeons. His most valuable performer of the season was the hen RO-2023-1151008. Although she started the Extreme season with a more modest arrival—finishing as the 5th pigeon in the loft at Kedainiai—she made a spectacular comeback in the following races, Madona and Birzai, where she arrived first in the loft and scored very high nationally.

She achieved 3rd place out of 1,498 pigeons at Birzai National (1,026 km), 19th place out of 1,993 pigeons at Kedainiai (928 km), and 42nd place out of 19,678 pigeons at Madona National. These results earned her the title of National 1st Ace Extreme Old Birds 2025, with a final coefficient of 13.66 penalty points.

“I have been competing since 2017, and my preferred categories are Middle Distance, Marathon, and more recently, Extreme. I keep around 15 breeding pairs and 70 racing pigeons. In 2025 I competed on natural system. At the first Extreme race the pigeons had 10-day-old chicks. At the second race they were sent on eggs, and at the third again with chicks. To achieve these breeding positions, I paired them after the first Middle Distance race and had to skip the first Fond race. For feeding I used several Vanrobaeys mixes such as No. 57, Dynamik, and Energy, along with Flornas race mix. Between Extreme stages I also carried out three training tosses by car, over 50–80 km, with evening releases. The champion hen comes from a cock from my colleague Marian Marțin and a hen bred by me, out of two pigeons that had very good results in 2020, being county and provincial Marathon champions,” explained Florin Zaharia.

The national podium is completed by hen RO-2021-0066920, with 14.14 penalty points, belonging to Marian Marțin, also from the Iași Federation. In 3rd place nationally is Sorin Racolta from Suceava, with hen RO-2021-1059290, which recorded 23.04 penalty points.
